While
many people remember the Fifties as America's
golden era, the shadow of the Cold War loomed
over the United States and influenced many
of the politics of the era. In 1950 Communist
North Korea invaded South Korea. General
Douglas McArthur commanded the UN forces.
The Korean War was waged to press the Communists
back past the 38th Parallel. That same year
senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin made
a name for himself by accusing members of
the Department of State of Communist subversion
in trials that resembled witch hunts. In
1954 the Supreme Court decided unanimously
to end government tolerance to racial segregation
in Brown v. Board of Education. Chief Justice
Earl Warren in the decision rejected the
Plessy v. Ferguson ruling declaring that
"separate but equal" wasn't good
enough. In 1950's the polio epidemic cast
fear throughout the nation. Finally, Dr.
Jonas Salk invented a vaccine in 1954 that
reduced rate of infection, and helped a
nation breath a much needed sigh of relief.
But before long the Soviets had launched
Sputnik into orbit. Share
your Cold War memories! |
